The Most Masked European Countries Have the Biggest Coronavirus Surges
France tried the Biden mask mandate. It didn’t work.
Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism.
“If we just wore these masks,” Joe Biden said, at the final presidential debate, holding up a mask like a totem, “we can save 100,000 lives.”
The Democrat nominee’s plan for fighting the coronavirus was all about wearing masks. And indeed the only notable element of Biden’s plan has been a national mask mandate.
But would that actually work? Would it even save one life, never mind 100,000?
Few European countries have been more mask-obsessed than France.
In July, France issued a national mask mandate compelling everyone to wear masks indoors in public spaces. Anyone caught not wearing a mask would face a fine of around $150. In August, Paris and a number of other regions imposed mask rules for anyone leaving the house.
Forget the stereotype of the Parisian nonchalantly dangling a gauloise between two yellowing fingers. “You’re not allowed to smoke on the street without a mask; you can’t take it off, so you must find another way,” Deputy Mayor Anne Souyris snapped.
How were Parisians to smoke without taking off their masks, cutting holes in them, or setting them on fire?
In a nod to another French obsession, cyclists were temporarily exempted, but AI was deployed on the metro to automatically detect which passengers weren’t covering their faces.
Some cynics suspected that this had something to do with France’s mask surplus. After buying a billion masks from China, the worldwide hub of the fashion industry ramped up its own mask production, but the demand wasn’t there leaving manufacturers with a 40 million mask surplus.
The initial drive to produce 5 million masks a day had left a lot of masks, many of them fashionable fabric masks, useless but pretty, sitting in warehouses with nowhere to go.
As the summer heat wore on, inspectors marched through French workplaces to check that everyone was masked. In a nod to class privileges, bosses were allowed to unmask in their private offices, but workers were forced to keep masks on unless they had 13 feet of space.
Still, 78% of French people polled claimed that they studiously wore their masks.
How well did that work out?
France recently passed 1.1 million confirmed cases and hit a record of over 52,000 cases in one day. While the media has been warning that the numbers are spinning out of control in the United States after this country passed 80,000 cases in a day, France’s numbers are far worse.
America, after all, has a much larger population than France.
Despite its strenuous mask regime, France became the country with the fifth largest number of cases, falling behind larger countries like America and Russia.
And it’s not alone.
In Spain, where 86% of people wear masks, the government has declared a six month state of emergency with nightly curfews and gatherings limited to 6 people. The only legal reason to leave your house after 11 PM or before 6 AM is to go to work or deal with an emergency.
Spain hit the 1 million mark even before France did.
And that’s despite a nationwide mask mandate back in May, along with a ban on public smoking, making it one of the first European countries to go all in on masks.
Even though masks became more widespread in Spain than most of the rest of the continent, and the country whose totalitarian past lies close to the surface, has unleashed some of the toughest lockdown measures, this is now Spain’s third coronavirus resurgence.
Italy, where 81% wear masks, responded to yet another spike with a fourth set of lockdown restrictions, shutting down gyms and theaters, while forcing restaurants and bars to close by 6 PM. No one is allowed to watch soccer games in person or go to wedding receptions.
Despite all the masks, Italy still holds the record for the second-highest death toll in Europe.
Meanwhile in Sweden, only 5% wear masks. The authorities have never recommended them believing that they are a waste of time. Sweden has used a soft lockdown that avoided fines and mandates. And the media in lockdown countries has spent the months lambasting Sweden and warning the rest of the world not to use it as a model.
But Sweden isn’t alone. In Denmark hardly anyone wears masks. And in Norway, less than a sixth do.
In the UK, where less than a third of Britons wear masks, the death rate is only a little higher than Italy, and it still hasn’t hit the 1 million mark despite a larger population.
In Europe, as in America, masks are a cultural, not medical, practice. The people likeliest and unlikeliest to wear them have cultural similarities. And they wear them for the same reason that the Biden campaign embraced wearing masks, not as a plan, but as a cultural symbol.
Wearing masks is not a plan to stop the virus, but it is a fetish of conformity. That is why so many politicians use the language of “respect” rather than medicine to encourage the practice.
Medical practices don’t need to be respected. Cultural beliefs, especially irrational ones, do.
The discomfort of wearing masks, especially in the hot southern countries like France, Spain, and Italy, perversely seem to affirm their effectiveness in the same way that some mouthwash manufacturers make their brands taste astringent to seem more medicinal.
People are trained to think that what is medically effective is also physically uncomfortable.
When the Black Death arrived, medieval Europeans resorted to a variety of practices and cures, some useful and many useless, some that had roots in a legitimate concept of illness, others that were little more than voodoo, to deal with a pandemic that had no easy answers.
The obsession with masks, an actual useful medical tool transformed into a cargo cult fetish, has echoes of the medieval misuse of legitimate medical practices during the Black Death.
In some medical environments masks may offer potential benefits, but mandating that entire populations wear them accomplishes nothing except keeping the French textile industry employed. That and the assorted unhealthy consequences of constantly wearing a mask.
But whether it’s using a severed snake to try and draw out the Black Death or wearing a mask, people in an outbreak feel the need to grasp at some means of controlling the threat. And they become angry at anyone who doesn’t appear to respect their chosen control mechanism.
Wearing a mask is meant to prevent the spread of the virus, not to protect the wearer. A CDC study showed that 88% of those infected wore masks. But the medieval logic of masks falsely assumes that wearing a mask protects you from the virus and that the virus only spreads due to those who don’t wear masks. And that creates natural scapegoats for the pandemic.
The Biden campaign and the Democrats are cynically cashing in on these pandemic fears.
“We’re in a circumstance where the president thus far and still has no plan, no comprehensive plan,” Biden ranted at the debate. “What I would do is make sure we have everyone encouraged to wear a mask all the time.”
France, Italy, and Spain tried that. It didn’t work.
The European countries most obsessed with masks are doing the worst. Nearly universal mask wearing in those countries has done little to prevent a surge. Democrats have a weakness for wanting to be like the Europeans. But the only thing the Biden mask mandate would do is turn us into France. The French wore masks through the summer heat only to have three times the cases per capita and per day as the Americans who never adopted a mask mandate.
Maybe, instead of Americans adopting the Biden mask mandate and becoming more like France, it’s time the French tried a little bit of freedom and being more like Americans.
Trump and Biden on Islam
The all-important details.
Raymond Ibrahim is a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
As the most important U.S. presidential election draws nigh, what—one must ask in light of the spate of terror attacks in France and elsewhere—are the two candidates’ positions on Islam?
Most recently, President Trump summarized both what his and a Biden presidency would entail during a rally in Butler, PA, on October 31:
To protect our security I suspended the entry of foreign refugees from terror afflicted nations. Biden has pledged a staggering 700 percent increase in refugees from the most violent terrorist hotspots anywhere on earth. If you don’t mind I’ll end that. And that was the deal, the manifesto, that he agreed to with Bernie Sanders and AOC+3 [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and three other female “progressive” reps, including Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan]….. The Biden plan would overwhelm your communities … and open the floodgates to radical Islamic terrorism. Call France; ask them how are they doing? You saw what’s happening there, and what’s happening is a disgrace…. So, if you don’t mind, we’ll take a pass, ok? You know I passed the ban, right, the ban, and everyone said “what a terrible thing,” and we won at the supreme court, and now we keep people out who can’t love our country, people that want to hurt people. We want them out and we will keep them out. We are keeping the terrorists and the jihadists … the hell out of our country.
Trump certainly seems to “get it.” His interest in “keep[ing] people out who can’t love our country” echoes another important assertion he once made. Back in March 2016, during a CNN interview when Trump was the Republican presidential candidate, he said:
I think Islam hates us. There’s something there that — there’s a tremendous hatred there. There’s a tremendous hatred. We have to get to the bottom of it. There’s an unbelievable hatred of us.
While these remarks were, as might be imagined, “triggering” to the Left, they also touched on a central truth: Islam does indeed teach Muslims to hate non-Muslims. According to the central doctrine of al-wal’a wa al-bara’, or “loyalty and enmity”—which is well grounded in the Koran and other Islamic scriptures, well sponsored by Islamic authorities, and well manifested all throughout Islamic history and contemporary affairs—Muslims must hate and oppose everyone who is not Muslim, including family members and their own wives.
Indeed, as if to settle the debate once and for all, a few months after Trump said “Islam hates us,” the Islamic State published an article aptly titled “Why We Hate You & Why We Fight You”:
We hate you, first and foremost, because you are disbelievers; you reject the oneness of Allah – whether you realize it or not – by making partners for Him in worship, you blaspheme against Him, claiming that He has a son [Christ], you fabricate lies against His prophets and messengers, and you indulge in all manner of devilish practices. It is for this reason that we were commanded to openly declare our hatred for you and our enmity towards you. “There has already been for you an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, ‘Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone’” [Koran 60:4]. Furthermore, just as your disbelief is the primary reason we hate you, your disbelief is the primary reason we fight you, as we have been commanded to fight the disbelievers until they submit to the authority of Islam, either by becoming Muslims, or by paying jizyah – for those afforded this option [“People of the Book”] – and living in humiliation under the rule of the Muslims [per Koran 9:29].
What about ol’ Joe? The Democratic presidential candidate is, as might be expected, standing by all the usual Democratic clichés: that Islam is inherently good and peaceful; that terrorists are “hijacking” the great faith for their own ends; and that more education, more “inclusion,” and less “Islamophobia” are what will put an end to terrorism.
Or, to quote from an October 15 New Arab report:
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden promised on Wednesday that Muslim Americans would serve at “every level” of his administration. In a video message to civil rights organization Muslim Advocates, Biden repeated his pledge to repeal the Trump administration’s travel ban on his first day in office. The former vice president added that he would push for legislation to fight a rise in hate crimes in the United States, according to media reports. “As president, I’ll work with you to rip the poison of hate from our society, honor your contributions and seek your ideas,” Biden said in the video address. “My administration will look like America, Muslim Americans serving at every level,” he added.
So, along with the countless other extreme differences between by the current and the would-be presidents, Trump offers a serious approach that recognizes some of Islam’s most problematic doctrines, while Biden offers the usual, feel good bromides—the natural culmination of which can now be seen in France, which is slowly resembling a war zone.
Trump’s Diverse Coalition Buried Obama’s Race-Baiting Politics
The 2020 election showed ‘racism’ accusations work only on white people.
Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism.
After four years of being accused of every form of bigotry on earth (and some that have yet to be discovered), Republicans brought home the largest share of non-white voters since 1960.
The last time Republicans had numbers like these, Democrats were the segregationist party.
The Democrat plan to turn Texas blue depended on organizing Latino voters. Instead Latino voters handed Trump entire counties while white suburbanites voted for Biden. The Black Lives Matter movement was meant to boost black turnout, instead black support for Trump grew.
The Colorado counties that shifted to Trump were majority Latino.
31% of Latinos, 30% of Asian Americans, and 12% of black people voted for Trump. Among black men, a shockingly unprecedented 18%, or nearly 1 in 5, cast their votes for him.
And,significantly, in the ‘Other’ category of people who are not white, but don’t fit into one of these categories on account of either being mixed race or another minority, 40% voted Trump.
28% of people who identify as gay, lesbian or transgender also voted for him.
In Florida, 47% of Latinos and 43% of Jews voted for Trump.
A coalition of working class Americans of all races, colors, and creeds flipped House seats and handed entire states to President Trump. They did it because they put the economy first and identity politics last. After four years of false accusations of racism, the Trump campaign emerged with the most multicultural Republican coalition in generations. In some ways, ever.
President Trump gained ground with every minority group, but lost ground with white people. The only group of white people that Biden won a majority with were college educated men.
That’s because racism accusations only really work on white people. Educated white people. And no one feels guiltier than the ultimate enemy of all that is wholly diverse: the white male.
Minority groups may vote in blocs, they may vote for candidates out of ethnic or racial pride, and they may vote against others because they sense or suspect hostility, but four years of racism accusations in the media not only didn’t shrink Trump’s minority vote share, but increased it.
White people live in fear of accusations of racism. They’re weighed down by a massive burden of guilt. So many of the suburbanites who voted for Biden are afraid of saying the wrong thing, not just because they’ll get fired or mobbed on social media, but because they believe the premise of the 1619 Project that America was born out of sin and that they’re guilty of it.
The 1619 Project, the rants of Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X. Kendi are meant for white people. White people are buying their books, flocking to their seminars, putting up Black Lives Matter signs outside their suburban estates, and beating their shriveled breasts in struggle sessions.
Identity politics is for minorities. Identity cringe is for white people.
Accusations of racism didn’t stop minorities from voting for Trump and Republicans, not even in the Black Lives Matter era, but they likely played a role in driving away some college educated white males. And college educated white people are the actual targets of cancel culture.
The Trump campaign was able to find black male celebrities who supported him, but the absence of any younger white celebrity besides Kid Rock on par with Kanye West or Lil Wayne is telling. A black celebrity’s career can survive a flirtation with Trump. Chris Pratt merely opting out of a Biden fundraiser led to an outburst of cancel culture rage and negative news coverage.
Accusations of racism are a powerful weapon in the political arsenal, but accusations of racism by media talking heads and activists have little ability to either intimidate or influence minorities.
How did President Trump and Republicans broaden their share of the vote by over a quarter since 2016? They appealed to practical economic interests and offered strong leadership. In a nation divided between workers and wokes, workers of all races came out for President Trump.
The racial obsession of the wokes is another fetish of a widely hated elite. The country is divided, not racially or economically, but culturally and politically. The wokes, who endlessly go on about everyone else’s privilege, dominate Big Tech and new corporate and government hires. The entertainment industry exists to serve their whims. Advertisers rush to throw up fantasy images of their lives to push their products. If they like a TV series, it gets picked up. If they start buying a beer, then the national chains treat them as influencers and stock up.
The rest of the country is beginning to notice it and is getting sick and tired of it.
The “resistance” was the hysterical outburst of an entitled and unhinged elite. So was the Black Lives Matter movement and its “anti-racism”. And while the elite is diverse, so is the anti-elite.
America is becoming a more diverse country. But that doesn’t mean bloc voting for Democrats.
Democrats and their media have decided to make all politics into identity politics while Trump countered by making all politics into anti-establishment politics. That’s the secret sauce.
Neo-Marxist politics require breaking society down into simplistic general categories, while populism harnesses the energy of anti-establishment hostility to powerful elites. The Democrats lectured minorities about race, gender, and equity, while Trump talked to them about elites.
The end result shows exactly why the establishment feared his brand of populist politics.
The 2020 election was many things. It pitted rural workers against suburban bedroom communities. It was the ultimate anti-lockdown protest in a locked down nation. And it was an uprising by the people who don’t run anything against those who seem to run everything.
That such an uprising touched nerves among minorities should come as no surprise.
Despite Democrat efforts to make the election all about race, 2020 is historic because for the first time since Obama put identity politics at the center of all presidential elections, a presidential election transcended race, gender, and the rest of the identity politics prison.
Whatever the outcome, it was a powerful redemptive movement that banished Obama’s legacy.
A man who had been falsely smeared as a racist built an unprecedentedly diverse coalition and fought a battle for the freedom of all Americans to live, to work, and to worship in freedom.
Hypocritical Outrage at Cartoons That Offend Muslims
Why do the UN, OIC, and Erdogan downplay Chinese religious persecution?
A statement released on October 28th by the office of the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) claimed that the republishing in France of satirical caricatures depicting Prophet Muhammed was responsible for provoking “acts of violence against innocent civilians who were attacked for their sheer religion, belief or ethnicity.” The UNAOC statement went on to say that “insulting religions and sacred religious symbols provokes hatred and violent extremism leading to polarization and fragmentation of the society.” This statement, which UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has endorsed, was issued 12 days after a jihadist beheaded a French teacher, Samuel Paty, who had shown his students the Muhammed caricatures. It’s no coincidence that Islamist Turkey is the UNAOC’s largest donor.
French President Emmanuel Macron correctly called the brutal killing an “Islamist terrorist attack.” More recently, another jihadist stabbed two women and a man to death at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice, which once again Macron linked to Islamist terrorism. Macron upheld one of Western civilization’s most important values by defending free speech against extremist violence from whatever source. “Samuel Paty … became the face of the Republic, of our will to shatter terrorists, to (do away with) Islamists, to live like a community of free citizens in our country,” Macron said. “We will continue.” Macron added that “Samuel Paty was the victim of a conspiracy of stupidity, hate, lies … hate of the other … hate of what we profoundly are.”
The Muslim world was enraged at Macron’s defense of the right of free speech. The anger spilled over into the streets and led to calls for the boycott of French goods. The so-called human rights body of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the “remarks of French politicians encouraging publishing blasphemous caricatures under the guise of a distorted version of the right to freedom of expression which manifestly prohibits incitement to hatred, discrimination and respect for rights of others protected under International Human Rights Law.”
Islamic jihadists demand that the West embrace Islamic law prohibiting “defamation” of Islam. Some Islamists have justified the beheading of Samuel Paty as righteous punishment for insulting their prophet or have called it just a pretext for hate speech against Islam. It is such jihadists as these who are inciting hatred and violence, not a teacher who was simply trying to teach his students about the value of free speech.
Exercising the right to criticize any religion or satirize its beliefs does not prevent Muslims from exercising their right to freely worship their faith and to honor Islam’s prophet. Criticizing or satirizing a religion or its symbols is not religious persecution. However, the United Nations, much less the OIC with which the UN is a strategic partner, does not see the difference. The world’s leading globalist organization would subordinate the fundamental right of free speech in the service of avoiding any critical expression that adherents of Islam find “insulting and deeply offensive.” This attitude gives cover for Islamists to cower people into silence through intimidation. Islamic terror in the West is again on the march, as seen not only in France but also in Vienna in recent days with the killing of at least four people.
Real religious persecution of Christians and Jews occurs regularly in the very same Muslim countries that are protesting “defamation” of their religion. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has escaped any meaningful criticism from the UN and the OIC as he relentlessly carries out his vow to ‘Sinicise’ religion in his country.
Under Xi’s direction, the Chinese regime is purging from Chinese society any religious beliefs that deviate from official Chinese Communist Party doctrine. Yet UN leaders have rarely called out the Chinese regime for real religious persecution and for repressing religious minorities in China, who simply seek to freely worship their faith. Instead, the UN bureaucracy would rather focus on so-called “hate speech” in the West.
The Chinese regime, for example, strictly governs which Christian churches are permitted to operate. Unauthorized churches have been closed. Christian pastors deemed “subversive” have been detained. Chinese church pastor Huang Xiaoning, who has been persecuted by Chinese authorities and shut out of his own church, said: “In substance, the theories of Christianity and Communism are at great odds with each other, so persecution against Christianity is a given.”
The Chinese regime has gone after other religious minorities as well. “Whether it’s the Dalai Lama or the Pope, or it’s the head of Falun Gong [a spiritual group], the state won’t tolerate it,” explained professor Dru Gladney, an expert in China’s ethnic minority groups.
Uighurs and other Muslims in China have been subjected to prolonged detention, surveillance, political indoctrination, systematic torture, and forced labor. French President Macron is one of several Western leaders who have raised concerns about the Chinese regime’s abuses against China’s Muslim Uighur minority. Macron did so during a meeting he held last summer with China’s State Councillor and Foreign Minister. But the Muslim world has been largely silent regarding such real abuses against people of their own faith. Instead, they have gone after Macron for hurting their feelings. Turkey’s Islamist President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who fancies himself as a major leader of the Muslim world, said Macron was being intolerant and needs “mental checks.”
Erdogan is a self-righteous hypocrite who should have his own head checked for delusions of grandeur. While Macron has confronted China about its treatment of Muslim Uighurs, Erdogan has sold out the Uighurs who have sought refuge in Turkey. Erdogan has been helping the Chinese regime to repatriate Uighur Muslims back to China. Turkish policemen reportedly arrested a refugee for speaking out against China’s treatment of Uighurs. While Erdogan had criticized China’s treatment of Uighurs in the past, the Chinese regime has evidently bought his betrayal of Muslim Uighurs with economic assistance.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has not only turned a deaf ear to the suffering of the Uighurs. It abandoned them to curry favor with the Chinese regime, with which it has developed a close relationship. Just last year the Council of Foreign Ministers under the Organization of Islamic Cooperation adopted a resolution commending “the efforts of the People’s Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens.”
China has effectively used its “Belt and Road” global infrastructure initiative as a means to buy support from the beneficiary countries for the Chinese regime’s anti-human rights agenda. The Chinese regime has also used its increasing contributions to various UN bodies to keep the UN bureaucracy on its side, all the way up to UN Secretary General Guterres.
Satiric cartoons draw OIC’s harsh condemnation, but never mind about the abusive Chinese regime’s mass persecution of Muslims. It is obvious that the OIC, Erdogan and the United Nations bureaucracy do not want to ruffle the feathers of the Chinese Communist leadership.
Will the election end up in the Supreme Court?
Election Day 2020 finally arrived. Anxiety across the country has reached a fever pitch about an election that may go down as the most divisive one since 1864, which was held during the midst of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln ended up winning that election handily. But the 2020 election has turned out to be much closer than pundits in the media and pollsters predicted, despite a widening gender gap and the movement of suburban voters into the Democratic camp. The tidal wave for Biden that Democrats were hoping for did not materialize. Polls in some key states such as Florida turned out to be way off base.
This race has seen a record numbers of mail-in ballots cast, which will be counted under a hodgepodge of rules that vary from state to state. The mail-in votes skewed heavily in favor of Biden in key battleground states in the early tallies, but Trump managed to close the gap with the votes from his supporters cast in person on Election Day. With teams of lawyers from both sides out in force planning to litigate close vote counts, it could be days or even weeks before we know for sure whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden will finally prevail.
In addition to trying to hold onto the White House, Republicans have the task of defending 23 seats in the Senate. As of early Wednesday morning, the Republicans took the contested Alabama Senate seat back from the Democrats, as former college football coach Tommy Tuberville defeated Democratic Senator Doug Jones. The Democrats in turn flipped the contested Senate Arizona seat, as Mark Kelly defeated the incumbent Senator Martha McSally who nevertheless has refused to concede. It looks like the Senate seats currently held by Susan Collins in Maine and Thom Tillis in North Carolina will remain Republican, although these races have not been officially called as of early Wednesday morning. If the Republicans manage to hold onto these seats, they will be able to retain control of the Senate. Meanwhile, the House is projected to remain in control of the Democrats.
Trump won Florida by a larger margin over Biden than he did over Hillary Clinton in 2016, due in no small measure to an increase of Hispanic support for Trump. A majority of seniors in Florida also continued to back Trump. The RealClearPolitics average in Florida was way off. It had Biden leading by almost one percentage point. North Carolina and Georgia were not called as of 2 am Eastern Time on Wednesday morning.
Moving to the Southwest region, Trump won Texas by a comfortable margin as expected. Biden, however, managed to flip Arizona, taking its 11 electoral votes from Trump’s column, according to a call by Fox News that the Trump campaign disputed as nearly a million ballots reportedly remained to be counted. A majority of Hispanic voters in Arizona reportedly supported Biden. Concerns over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic among the growing senior population in Arizona weighed in Biden’s favor.
As expected, President Trump won Ohio by a clear margin, which significantly exceeded the RealClearPolitics average of 1 percent. Trump also won Iowa by a margin that only the Des Moines Register came close to predicting. Republican Senator Joni Ernst won her campaign for re-election.
Attention turned, as it did in 2016, to the battle ground states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and especially Pennsylvania. All three states remained up for grabs as of early Wednesday morning.
Biden was still more than 30 electoral votes short of reaching the 270 needed to win when he decided to emerge from his Wilmington, Delaware basement to make a statement at around 12:30 am Wednesday morning Eastern Time. He predicted victory, while foreshadowing a fight against any challenges to the validity of ballots by demanding that “every vote be counted.”
President Trump then tweeted: “We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election. We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!” Twitter once again shilled for the Biden campaign by posting, “Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process.”
In subsequent remarks, Trump was defiant. He declared that he would not stand for the disenfranchisement of the voters who came out in droves to support him. He claimed victory in Georgia and North Carolina. “They can’t catch us,” he said. Trump also questioned the call for Biden in Arizona. “Most importantly,” Trump said, “we are winning Pennsylvania.” He also pointed to substantial leads in Wisconsin and Michigan. “Frankly, we did win this election,” Trump said as he complained of fraud and efforts to steal the election. “We will be going to the Supreme Court,” Trump vowed.
President Trump has every reason to be concerned about the potential for cheating, particularly in Pennsylvania – the state that may well turn out to be ground zero for determining the final outcome of the election. Pennsylvania is allowing mail-in ballots received up to three days after Election Day to be counted so long as the envelopes containing the ballots are postmarked by Election Day. Moreover, if a postmark is smudged, the sender will be given the benefit of the doubt that the ballot envelope was postmarked on time. Finally, Pennsylvania has decided not to match signatures. The result will be litigation that makes Florida in 2000 seem like child’s play. Pennsylvania’s Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro added fuel to the fire when he declared before any votes were counted that “if all the votes are added up in PA, Trump is going to lose.”
The Supreme Court has avoided making a ruling so far on whether rules changes such as extensions for receipt of mail-in ballots are lawful if not enacted by the state legislature. Unless North Carolina and Georgia end up in Biden’s column and make what happens in Pennsylvania moot, the Supreme Court will not be able to duck the election issues for too long.
Black Lives Matter = Marxism Matters
It’s called “Black Lives Matter” because Marxism Matters would get less $upport.
I suppose some people need this to be spelled out explicitly, about what really matters to “Black Lives Matter”. It’s not about blacks, it’s not about caring about black lives, it’s not about anything that the leftist media, socialist media, and leftist-run corporations who $ponsor this black supremacist terrorist group tell us it’s about. It’s about cold-blooded Anti-American Marxism, just as its black communist founders explicitly stated. And because they then scrubbed that fact from their official website, after they realized it hurt their “cause”, my cartoon is an explicit reminder.
If Western Europe is to survive . . .
Although I’ve lived in Europe since 1998 and traveled widely on the continent ever since, I’d never set foot in Austria until November of two years ago, when I spent a few days in Vienna. I enjoyed the visit so much that I went back in September of last year. I’d hoped to make these visits an annual practice, but the pandemic got in the way.
Meanwhile, I found myself writing a great deal about the U.S. presidential campaign, which shifted my focus away from my longtime principal topic, Islam in Europe. Also contributing to this shift was the fact that terrorism in Europe went through something of a lull. Yes, there were those horrible beheadings in France, which I wrote about. But for the most part I was preoccupied with Trump vs. Biden.
Then, on Monday evening, in an effort to clear my mind of all thoughts about the election, I sat down with my partner to re-watch The Americans, the best drama series in the history of American television. While we were watching it, he said that something had happened in Vienna. I replied that he must have misunderstood: nothing in the entire series has ever had anything to do with Vienna. He said no, he was talking about the real world. I looked over to see that he’d been checking the news on his phone.
Vienna! Multiple shooters, it was reported, had opened fire at several locations in the city center. Latest reports from the BBC indicate that two men and two women were killed and twenty-two more wounded, most of them apparently shot outside of bars and restaurants.
One of the terrorists, a 20-year-old with dual North Macedonian and Austrian citizenship who carried a rifle, a pistol, and a machete, was shot dead by police; reports are that he was imprisoned in April of last year “after trying to get to war-torn Syria to join Islamic State (IS) jihadists,” but was given early release in December “under more lenient terms for young adults.” Home searches in Vienna led to the arrests of several suspects; two others were arrested in a nearby town. As of Tuesday afternoon, Vienna time, people were being urged to stay inside, and to keep children out of school, while the police hunt down other suspects; 90% of stores in downtown Vienna were closed.
In its report, the BBC noted that in recent years Austria had largely been spared the kind of terrorist acts that have taken place elsewhere in Western Europe. Let it be remembered, however, that it was in Vienna, 337 years, seven weeks, and four days ago, that the united forces of much of Christendom, under the command of Polish king Jan III Sobieski turned back the army of the Ottoman Empire, thereby effectively quashing an Islamic threat to Europe that has been revived only in the last few decades.
Eastern European leaders have long made clear their determination to stand up to Islam; in an October 2 speech, French President Emmanuel Macron, formerly wishy-washy on the topic, seemed to channel his own Jan Sobieski, issuing a ringing affirmation of French secularism and condemning decades of creeping Islamization in French institutions. And Austria’s own chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, is arguably tougher on the enemy within than any other head of state in Western Europe, closing foreign-funded mosques, deporting dangerous imams, and spearheading an initiative to uproot the influence of “political Islam” in Austria.
All very good, but not enough. If Western Europe is to survive, its leaders need to get on the same page – defending human freedom and civilization against a barbaric ideology of violent conquest and oppression. So do the Western European media, such as the Financial Times, which only hours after the attacks in Vienna posted a ridiculous article in which Brussels correspondent Mehreen Khan accused Macron of “stok[ing] moral panic about the ‘Muslim question,’” and the Guardian, which on November 1 ran a despicable column in which Simon Tisdall essentially blamed the recent beheadings in Paris and Nice on Macron’s October 2 speech.
What are the chances that Western Europe will straighten up and fly right? Well, consider this: yesterday afternoon, according to Reuters, police in seven European countries – the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Norway, and the Czech Republic – took part in “coordinated raids.” They searched 83 apartments and questioned 96 suspects. What were those suspects suspected of? Planning jihadist attacks? No. Of writing “hateful posts…online” about guess who.
blooded Anti-American Marxism, just as its black communist founders explicitly stated. And because they then scrubbed that fact from their official website, after they realized it hurt their “cause”, my cartoon is an explicit reminder.
The Isolated American Jews
Isolated more than ever.
Without knowing the results of the US presidential elections, certain conclusions can already be drawn safely. For instance, we can say with certainty that between 70 and 80% of American Jews voted for the Democrat, former Vice President Joe Biden.
On the face of things, American Jews could have been expected to vote in the same proportion, in the exact opposite direction. After all, from Britain to France to Australia, in recent decades, Jewish communities in advanced industrial democracies have moved from Left to Right.
Their move came in response to the transformation of their traditional political homes into hostile ground. Since the early 20th century, parties on the political Left were traditionally more sympathetically inclined to Jews than parties on the right. But since the outset of the 21st century, that historic trend has been largely reversed. Parties on the Left have become increasingly hostile to Jews and parties on the Right have been making sustained efforts to win over the support of the Jewish communities. From Toulouse to Leeds to Berlin to Melbourne, Jews have been reading the same political map and turning to the Right.
In America, the political situation is comparable to that of other Western democracies. From one election cycle to the next, the power of progressive forces hostile to Israel and to Jewish Americans has grown in the Democratic Party. In contrast, the Republican Party has become the most pro-Israel and pro-Jewish party outside of Israel the world has ever seen. And yet, in stark contrast to their brethren in England and Belgium, American Jews have steadfastly maintained their allegiance to the Democrats and the political Left.
Over the past four years, the contrast in political behavior between American Jews and Jews from other Western democracies has become ever more remarkable. On the one hand, Donald Trump is the most pro-Israel and pro-Jewish president in US history. Trump has stood with Israel almost unconditionally. He has fought anti-Semitism in the US more effectively than any other president and he has done so throughout his presidency.
For their part, the Democrats have taken giant strides towards becoming the US version of the Jeremy Corbyn-led Labour Party. It isn’t simply that rising stars of the Democrat Party like congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar boycott Israel. They do so with the full backing of the party’s leadership. Biden’s running mate Senator Kamala Harris sided with Omar against American Jews who called for the party to censure Omar after one of her more egregious anti-Semitic outbursts last year.
Harris has strong ties to the National Iranian-American Council – the Iranian regime’s lobby in Washington. Campaign financing filings from the Biden campaign on the eve of the election show that NIAC is one of its largest campaign donation bundlers. Harris enthusiastically supported the nuclear deal with Iran and boycotted last year’s AIPAC conference.
In his 47 years in politics, Biden arguably racked up the largest and most long-standing record of support for Iran in US politics. Biden’s initial reaction to the 9/11 attacks was to call for the US to give $200 million to Iran.
British Jewry abandoned Labour in droves and devoted their communal efforts to calling out and fighting anti-Semitism in the Labour Party after Corbyn first won the leadership race in 2015. Some 90% of British Jews voted for Conservatives in last year’s elections. In contrast, American Jews are among President Trump’s most outspoken and peripatetic demonizers.
What explains the yawning gap between American Jews and other Western Jewish communities, not to mention between American Jews and Israeli Jews?
American Jews are giving the Democratic Party a pass for abandoning them because they don’t want to acknowledge that they are being abandoned. Despite the progressives’ hostility to the Jews, the Jews want to remain progressives.
Among the progressive Jews who have noticed the rise of anti-Semitic forces in their party, they are consoled and given permission to remain in the party from Jewish leaders and public figures who insist that while things are not perfect, or even good in their own camp, they can stay because Trump – while nice to Israel – is a crypto-Nazi.
Repeated, fact-free slanders from the likes of Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt and from writer Bari Weiss alleging that Trump praised white supremacists at the Charlottesville riots in 2017 – even when he condemned them, both during and immediately after the riots three times; along with allegations that Trump dog-whistles to white supremacists and thus enables their attacks against Jews, enable progressive Jews who are concerned about what is happening in their party to stay put despite their concerns.
Skyrocketing assimilation rates among American Jews indicate that all things being equal, most Jews on the political Left will cease identifying as Jews within a generation and a half. So, too, the rise of anti-Zionist American Jews who support the annihilation of Israel as a Jewish state indicates that in the coming years, more likely than not, American Jews will take leading roles in the Democratic/progressive campaign against Israel. Notably, two months after he called for Israel to be destroyed in a column in the New York Times, last month the NYT gave leading American Jewish anti-Zionist Peter Beinart a regular column.
As their massive support for Biden indicates, regardless of what the future holds for them, American Jews today are isolated more than ever before. They are isolated within their political camp which doesn’t care about them, and they are isolated within the Jewish world.
