Ποζάρουν στον φωτογραφικό φακό και ανοίγουν την ψυχή τους. Η εξομολόγηση που καθηλώνει…

Η τελετή για τα θύματα του Ολοκαυτώματος, με την οποία κορυφώθηκε η χθεσινή πορεία μνήμης, είχε μόλις ολοκληρωθεί στον παλιό σιδηροδρομικό σταθμό της Θεσσαλονίκης, εκεί απ’ όπου 76 χρόνια πριν ξεκινούσαν τα πρώτα τρένα για τα στρατόπεδα – κολαστήρια της ναζιστικής μηχανής θανάτου ανά την Ευρώπη.

Ακουμπισμένος στην εξέδρα, όπου λίγο νωρίτερα όλοι όσοι ανέβηκαν διατράνωναν «ΠΟΤΕ ΞΑΝΑ» στη θηριωδία και αψηφώντας τον καυτό ανοιξιάτικο ήλιο, ο Juergen Jauch (Γιούργκεν Γιάουχ) περίμενε υπομονετικά να τελειώσει τη συζήτησή του ο ηλικιωμένος κύριος με το καπέλο και το μπαστούνι, μόνο και μόνο για να μπορέσει να του σφίξει το χέρι και να του πει «συγγνώμη».

Ο παππούς του Jurgen Jauch ήταν στρατιώτης της Βέρμαχτ, με θητεία στη Θεσσαλονίκη και ο αιωνόβιος κύριος απέναντί του ένας από τους λιγοστούς επιζώντες του Ολοκαυτώματος, ο Αχιλλέας Κουκουβίνος. Με έκδηλη τη συγκίνηση στη φωνή και το βλέμμα, ο Juergen Jauch, που θεωρεί ότι «η σιωπή είναι ενοχή», πλησίασε τον Αχιλλέα Κουκουβίνο, του αφηγήθηκε την προσωπική του ιστορία και του ζήτησε «συγγνώμη» για όλα όσα αναγκάστηκε να βιώσει, με το συνομιλητή του να τού δίνει εγκάρδια το χέρι και να τον κοιτάζει με βλέμμα που μαρτυρούσε τη συγχώρεση.

Ήταν μόλις 9 ετών όταν πέθανε ο παππούς του και τότε ο Jurgen Jauch δεν ήξερε τίποτα για τη δράση του ως στρατιώτη της Βέρμαχτ, στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όπου ήταν μέλος εκτελεστικού αποσπάσματος. Έμελλε να μάθει πολλά χρόνια αργότερα, σε μια στιγμή αδυναμίας της μητέρας του, την αληθινή, όπως λέει, οικογενειακή τους ιστορία.

«Υπήρχε σιωπή για τα όσα έγιναν στη Θεσσαλονίκη»!!!

«Ήταν πολύ δύσκολο. Υπήρχε πολλή σιωπή. Κανείς δεν μιλούσε γι’ αυτό και χρειάστηκε πολλή δουλειά για να μάθω την αλήθεια για τον παππού μου και για τον πόλεμο εδώ, στην Ελλάδα και τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Η μητέρα μου, σε μια στιγμή μας ανοίχτηκε, μας μίλησε. Γενικά δεν ήθελαν (οι συγγενείς) να μιλούν γι’ αυτή την πτυχή αλλά κάποιες στιγμές η καρδιά ανοίγει κι έτσι κατάφερα κι εγώ, σε μια τέτοια στιγμή, να πάρω πολλές πληροφορίες. Χρειάζεται, ωστόσο, χρόνια για να καταλάβεις τι ακριβώς έγινε εδώ», είπε στο ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ ο Jurgen Jauch.

Προκειμένου, δε, να συνθέσει ψηφίδα – ψηφίδα το μωσαϊκό της ιστορίας, προσέφυγε σε μια ειδική υπηρεσία, από την οποία μπορεί κάποιος στη Γερμανία να αντλήσει πληροφορίες για το πού ακριβώς υπηρέτησε ο πατέρας ή ο παππούς του στον πόλεμο. «Μου έστειλαν τις ημερομηνίες και προσπάθησα να δω τι έκανε εκείνη την εποχή η Βέρμαχτ (λέγε με “Γερμανικό Πεζικό”) εδώ. Είδα ότι υπήρχαν πολλές εκτελέσεις στη Θεσσαλονίκη και εκείνη την περίοδο ο παππούς μου ήταν εδώ», ανέφερε ο Juergen Jauch.

Μόλις έμαθε αυτή την πτυχή της ιστορίας, ήρθε για πρώτη φορά πριν από 7-8 χρόνια στη Θεσσαλονίκη για να συναντήσει ορισμένα από τα θύματα της ναζιστικής θηριωδίας και να ζητήσει (και πάλι) «συγγνώμη» καθώς «ενοχή είναι να μην ρωτάς τί συνέβη». Θυμάται, μάλιστα, πως πολλοί απ’ όσους συνάντησε του είπαν πως ήταν η πρώτη φορά που άκουγαν αυτή τη λέξη από την άλλη πλευρά, αυτή των θυτών.

«Νομίζω ότι είναι πολύ σημαντικό να λες την αλήθεια, να δώσεις (στους θύτες) ένα όνομα. Να μην λες πως ό,τι έγινε, το έκαναν κάποιοι ναζί. Ήταν και ο παππούς μου. Ήταν εδώ, στην Ελλάδα…».

Αν και δεν πρόλαβε να γράψει πολλές σελίδες στο βιβλίο των αναμνήσεών του από την εποχή που ήταν στη ζωή ο παππούς του, ο Juergen Jauch θέλησε να μάθει από τους ανθρώπους γύρω του για το πώς ένιωθε μετέπειτα για εκείνη τη σκοτεινή περίοδο του πολέμου. «Έμαθα ότι φοβόταν συνεχώς, είχε πολλά ψυχολογικά προβλήματα, μιλούσε πάντα για τον παράδεισο και την κόλαση και αυτό δείχνει ότι όλη του τη ζωή είχε μεγάλο φόβο μέσα του», θυμάται.

«Λέγοντας την αλήθεια ήρθαμε αντιμέτωποι με πολλές καταστάσεις, κατά τις οποίες ήρθε η «συμφιλίωση» με τους επιζώντες και τις οικογένειές τους», ανέφερε η Sabine Schwarz και πρόσθεσε: «Οι πρόγονοί μας δεν μίλησαν, σιώπησαν μπροστά στη θηριωδία αλλά δεν μπορούμε κι εμείς να κάνουμε το ίδιο, να παραμείνουμε σιωπηλοί καθώς η σιωπή είναι ενοχή. Πρέπει να βγούμε έξω και να κινητοποιήσουμε ανθρώπους».

Το μήνυμα που τόσο η ίδια όσο και ο Jurgen Jauch στέλνουν, ιδίως προς τα νέα παιδιά, είναι να μην σιωπούν. «Όταν γίνονται αστεία για Εβραίους δίπλα σας ή αν κάποιος δέχεται επίθεση μόνο και μόνο επειδή είναι Εβραίος, μη σιωπάτε, μη φοβάστε. Να στέκεστε απέναντι στον αντισημιτισμό», ανέφεραν χαρακτηριστικά.

«Το μίσος δεν είναι η σωστή οδός. Η σωστή οδός είναι να βγεις στον δρόμο και να πεις: είμαι στο πλευρό όλων των ανθρώπων του πλανήτη», υπογράμμισαν οι δύο Γερμανοί, μέλη της «March of Life», εκφράζοντας την ελπίδα πως και την ερχόμενη χρονιά θα δώσουν το «παρών» στο ετήσιο «ραντεβού» της Θεσσαλονίκης, με τη μνήμη και το παρελθόν της…

Ο Jurgen Jauch και η Sabine Schwarz δεν είναι τα μόνα μέλη της ομάδας που θέλησαν να ζητήσουν «συγγνώμη» στα θύματα των προγόνων τους, εδώ, στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Στην πρώτη πορεία μνήμης, το 2013, ένας άλλος επιζών του Ολοκαυτώματος, ο Μοσέ Αελιόν, ο οποίος σήμερα ζει στο Ισραήλ, είχε ακούσει τις απολογίες δύο άλλων μελών της ομάδας, της Ruth Karrer (Ρουτ Κάραρ) και Tina Pompe (Τίνα Πόμπε), οι οποίες είχαν ταξιδέψει τότε από τη Γερμανία για να περπατήσουν μαζί με τους χιλιάδες Θεσσαλονικείς και ανθρώπους απ’ όλο τον κόσμο, που συμμετείχαν σ’ εκείνη τη μεγάλη πορεία.

Θα πρέπει εκτιμώ πάντως, για ιστορικούς λόγους, να ερευνηθεί ο ρόλος του τότε Ραββίνου Θεσσαλονίκης, ο οποίος παρέδωσε λίστα στους Γερμανούς (“Βέρμαχτ”) της Θεσσαλονίκης, με τα ονόματα όλων σχεδόν των Εβραίων της πόλης, οι οποίοι ακολούθως συγκεντρώθηκαν από τους Γερμανούς και εστάλησαν στα Κρεματόρια!..

9. Κε Παπαγγελόπουλε ή -πιθανώς(!)- και αποκαλούμενε… “Ρασπούτιν“! (Αν και περισσότερο μοιάζεις με τον Κουασιμόδο, λόγω της άθλιας μορφής σου, καθώς και του χαρακτηριστικού ύβου σου / καμπούρας)! Είδες που εδώ σου και σας είχαμε  γράψει πως οι 3 ψυχές των αθώων νεκρών της “Μαρφίν” και ειδικά του εμβρύου “ΘΑ ΣΑΣ ΚΥΝΗΓΟΥΝ ΜΕΧΡΙ ΝΑ ΚΛΕΙΣΕΤΕ ΤΑ ΜΑΤΙΑ ΣΑΣ, ΑΝ ΔΕΝ ΚΑΘΗΣΕΤΕ ΣΤΟΣ ΚΑΜΝΙ ΤΟΥΣ ΦΟΝΙΑΔΕΣ”;

– Με το θέμα του προτεινόμενου νέου καθεστώτος για τις Μολότωφ (κατάντια ε;) και τα όσα “ωραία” δήλωσε αυτή η προσωποποίηση του μίσους, ο δήθεν πρώην δημ/φος και νυν “μέγας” δύσμορφος πολιτικός ΣΥΡΙΖΑΙΟΣ Κος Κυρίτσης, ή είχε δηλώσει παλαιότερα η Κα… Λοϊζου, ναι, αυτή η υποψήφια Ευρωβουλευτής του “εν Ελλάδι” Κόμματος του Σόρος, που τόλμησε να μιλήσει για… σκατοψυχία (μάλιστα είπε “σκατοψυχιά”), εμπρός από τάφους, ή όσα αντίθετα δήλωσε, μετά από προφανή… επιφοίτηση, πχ ο Φίλης, το κινούμενο αυτό πολιτικό “παχύδερμο”, εμφανίστηκαν και πάλι μπροστά σας οι ψυχές αυτές!!! Το ξεπεράσατε άραγε ή όχι ακόμα; Έτσι σποραδικά θα εμφανίζονται ξέρεις οι ψυχές αυτές, όπως και ξαφνικά και πάντα από κάποιο λόγο, σχετικό ή άσχετο, εμπρός σας και θα σας… χαιρετούν!.. ΟΛΑ ΕΔΩ ΠΛΗΡΩΝΟΝΤΑΙ Κε… ΜΙΜΗ!..

10. Προς στιγμήν, με όσα είχα ακούσει σχετικά, αλλά και με όσα λίγα είχα δει, πίστεψα πως ο Κος Ν. ΠΑΠΠΑΣ θα ασχολείτο πράγματι στ’ αλήθεια και μάλιστα σε βάθος, με οργάνωση, σχέδιο και άρα με προοπτική, καθώς και με μια προωθημένη θεώρηση, με τα των δορυφόρων και γενικώς με τα του Διαστήματος, τομέα που η Ελλάδα έχει μείνει τραγικά πίσω, για σύγχρονη ευρωπαϊκή χώρα, αλλά πίσω και για ένα τέτοιο, πραγματικά ζηλευτό και συνάμα φοβερό, επιστημονικό προσωπικό που διαθέτει!

– Γελάστηκα όμως, αφού η όλη υπόθεση, κατέληξε σε… εμφύλιο επιστημόνων, (αν κατάλαβα καλά το θέμα, αν κατάλαβα καλά το τί έγινε), καθώς και σε καταγγελίες για ρουσφετολογικές παρεμβάσεις του Υπουργού, με οικονομικές μάλιστα συνημμένες… ουρές, και με κατάληξη -και πάλι δυστυχώς- να μετατρέπεται σε ΠΑΡΑΤΗΡΗΤΗ και μάλλον να εγκαταλείπει το -κατ’ εμέ- εθνικό αυτό θέμα ο… “Μπέρια” της Κ-Β!..

– Άρα άκουσα και ακούω, (ιστορικός Ενεστώς, με ό,τι αυτός εκφράζει), από “με ουδέτερη στάση”, έως στάση “στον κλείδωνα”, τις όποιες πρόσφατες αναφορές του υπόψη Κου Υπουργού … και “Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής”, περί ολοκληρωτικής εισαγωγής νέων τεχνολογιών στην χώρα μας, κλπ, όπως και ό,τι άλλο συναφές, διότι απλώς, δεν θέλω και πάλι να απογοητευτώ, παραμένοντας… εγκεφαλικά ακόμα, στις όποιες λίγες, αλλά που όμως θα τις έκρινα ως επιτυχημένες, προσπάθειες του ΓΑΠ, ως Π-Θ, στο υπόψη θέμα!

11.  Είπε ο Τσίπρας, στην επίσκεψη Μοράλες, μιλώντας προς αυτόν! “Μοιραζόμαστε κοινές αξίες με την Βολιβία”! 

– Ναι ρε Τσίπρα, έχεις δίκιο! Μοιραζόμαστε με τους Βολιβιανούς τα “Τοτέμ”, τους Μάγους, τους Φυλάρχους, τους Ινδιάνους… Ρομά του… Πύργου, με αυτούς του “Λα Παζ”, κλπ!.. Αχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχαχα

– Με πόσο σανό και δη πολυτελείας (υπάρχει άραγε;) θα πρέπει να σε έχουν ταϊσει εκεί στα κομμουνιστικά σχολεία των… νεναικών σου χρόνων ρε Αλέξη μας;

12.Η “Εισαγγελέας… Διαφθοράς” Κα Τουλουπάκη, πώς και πήρε στην Ακρόπολη(!) σπίτι, όπως άκουσα, αξίας 280.000 Ευρώ; Δεν θα πρέπει να μας εξηγήσει τα “πώς” και τα “γιατί”, που λέει και ο… Αφτιάς, ώστε να μην την χαρακτηρίσουμε… “ΕΞΑΔΕΛΦΗ” του “ΣYΡIZAIOY” “Τσοχό“;

13. Ναι! Μόνον ένας Πράκτορας θα έκανε και θα έλεγε, τα όσα λέγει και πράττει ο Υπ. Παιδείας, εκ Κων-πόλεως ορμώμενος Κος Γαβρόγλου! Έχει δίκιο ο Κος Τράγκας!

– Τελευταίο του λεκτικό… κατόρθωμα, ενδεικτικό των… ιδεών του (sic), ήταν οι Σκοπιανής χροιάς έμμεσες (λαϊκιστί, πούστικες, με το συμπάθιο) αναφορές του περί εισαγωγής της λεγόμενης “ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΚΗΣ” (sic) γλώσσας, της Σερβο-Βουλγαρικής δηλαδή γλώσσας των Σκοπιανών, στα ελληνικά Παν-μια, και ειδικά στο Αριστοτέλειο, μετά από την απάντηση που έδωσε ο Πρύτανης του υπόψη Παν-μίου, στο… πολιτικό Κόμμα “Ουράνιο Τόξο”, που του υπέβαλε σχετικό αίτημα!..

Three converts from Islam to Christianity who live in the Netherlands recently spoke about their experiences, and it’s clear that they’re not exactly finding diversity, in the form of mass Muslim migration into Europe, to be their strength.

An ex-Muslim from Kurdistan named Faraidoun Fouad recounted: “I converted in 1999. In 2002 God called me to reach out to my own people. Directly after my conversion to Christianity I received the first threats. People who I thought were my friends, became my enemies.”

Nor were his former friends all jihadis: “Even Muslims who are not very conservative told my wife that they would kill me.”

Fouad converted twenty years ago, but his Muslim ex-friends have never gotten used to the fact: “I receive threats every day. When I post something on Facebook, I often receive hateful reactions.”

Fouad’s experience was similar to that of another convert, a woman named Esther Mulder who fled Somalia in 1992. Though they had left the homeland, they brought its mores to the Netherlands; when Esther was 14, they told her she was about to be married off. What she wanted had nothing to do with it, so she ran away from home and lived in shelters. Finally she married a Dutchman and converted to Christianity.

The first time she entered a church, she was frightened: “I constantly looked around thinking: ‘What if one of my family members comes in or someone from Somalia?’”

After she converted, matters got even worse: “After my conversion, the threats started. Especially on Facebook. Most of the time they’re coming from other Somalis. They write to me in Somali, so no one else is able to understand what they’re saying. We once posted a picture of a Somali conference where everyone was standing in front of a cross. People didn’t like it and we received several threats. I was really sorry about that.”

She reestablished contact with her family, but the tension level is high: “When I’m there, my father leaves the house. The last thing he ever said to me, is that I’m no longer his daughter.”

Another convert refused to give the interviewer his name, explaining: “My family lives in Morocco and could get in trouble over this.” He recounted: “My mother taught me to respect everyone and to be kind. That was in stark contrast to what Islam was teaching me. I had to hate and curse Jews and Christians. Muhammed was my big role model, but his life was bad. He killed Jews and married a girl of six. How could he be my role model?”

After he converted, the threats started coming in so quickly that he printed out eight pages full of them and went to the police. The police counseled cowardice: “The police advised me to delete my picture from my website. I prayed about it and the Lord told me to keep the picture, ‘for you belong to me.’ It’s strange isn’t it: I’m not doing anything wrong, why would I need to hide? I live in a free country.”

Why would he need to hide? Because the new, multicultural Netherlands is not quite as free a country as it once was. The threats this man has received are a direct result of mass Muslim migration into Europe. Nor will these converts be able to rest easy anytime soon. The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law. It’s based on the Qur’an: “They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)

A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-‘ashriyyah, Al-Ja’fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”

Qaradawi also once famously said: “If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn’t exist today.”

But it does, and it is growing fast in the Netherlands, and so ex-Muslims must always tread carefully. What else did Europe’s multicultural masters expect?

15.  Ο Τραμπ συνεχάρη τον Τσίπρα, “καθαρά” για τις Πρέσπες, διότι οι Η.Π.Α. έκαναν έτσι την δουλειά τους στην περιοχή, μη ενδιαφερόμενοι, (αντίθετα με τους Γερμανούς), για το όνομα που θα έπαιρναν τελικώς οι Σκοπιανοί!.. 

– Πάντως η αλήθεια είναι πως μας στεναχώρησε Ο Κος ΤΡΑΜΠ, έξω από τα “must” της διεθνούς διπλωματίας, που με βάση αυτά τον κατανοούμε, αφού θα έπρεπε να ξέρει, γιατί πράγμα μιλάμε,όταν λέμε Τσίπρας! Θα έπρεπε να ξέρει τέλος ότι η Ελλάδα, ναι η Ελλάδα του Κόσμου, έχει νεο – κομμουνιστική, διεθνιστική Κ-Β, λες και είναι ΚΑΤΑΡΑΜΕΝΗ από τον Θεό ή ΤΙΜΩΡΗΜΕΝΗ απ’ αυτόν, διότι Ο ΛΑΟΣ ΜΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΝ ΞΕΧΑΣΕ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΝ ΠΡΟΔΩΣΕ!.. “Έσεται Ήμαρ” όμως Κε ΤΡΑΜΠ!

16. Μήπως τώρα, μετά από την σημερινή (18-03-2019) αναγνώριση των Σκοπίων από την Ρωσία, με το νέο στον Ο.Η.Ε. όνομά της, το “Β. Μακεδονία”, κατάλαβαν κάποιοι Έλληνες… Ρωσόφιλοι, ότι υπάρχουν μόνον… Έλληνες, για την Ελλάδα, και όσοι τυχόν άλλοι (ξένες δυνάμεις μεγάλες και μη) θα έλθουν -πιθανώς- ως αρωγοί της, στην όποια θετική για εμάς μελλοντική ιστορική συγκυρία, ανάλογα πάντα με τα συμφέροντά τους;

17. “Χάκερς”, σαν αυτούς τους Ιρανούς που χάκαραν τους Νετανιάχου, έβαλαν στο “σάϊτ” μας την ακολουθούσα “φωτό”, την οποία η τεχνική μας Ομάδα δεν μπόρεσε ακόμα να “βγάλλει”!.. Δείτε την και παρακαλούμε να μας ΣΥΓΧΩΡΕΣΕΤΕ!..

The recent blow-up between Israel and Poland over the history of the Holocaust and World War II illustrates why politicians often need to use caution when speaking of the past.

A conflict recently started at a conference in Warsaw — which was initially designed to cement the alliance between Israel and the Visegrad 4 (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic). The conference sought to build a stronger front against radical Islam and strengthen enforcement of sanctions on Iran. Despite oppositional pressure from the EU and threats from Iran, the Poles hosted the conference, which included U.S. and Israeli leaders (EU countries declined to send anyone of significance.)

The conference took a turn when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an off-the-cuff remark that “the Poles collaborated with the Nazis,” which was trumpeted by Haaretz, a paper hostile to the prime minister. Netanyahu’s aides later clarified that he meant some Poles, not all. Then, Foreign Minister Yisroel Katz doubled down, calling Poles Nazi collaborators who “suck in anti-Semitism with their mother’s milk.” Compounding the comments, MSNBC’s historian-in-residence Andrea Mitchell claimed that the Ghetto Uprising was fought against the “Polish and Nazi regime.” Then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo highlighted a Polish-American “success story” and chose Frank Blaichman, an ex-communist partisan-turned-Stalinist secret policeman who came to the U.S. after a career of torturing and killing members of the non-communist resistance. The conference fell apart with Poles demanding apologies and Israelis refusing. Follow-up meetings of Israel’s central European allies slated to be held in Israel were canceled. The Russians and Iranians celebrated and Brussels quietly gloated about the troublesome Poles getting their comeuppance.

A short article cannot fully explain the complicated history that bitterly divides and yet binds Poles and Jews, but the implications that Poles were pro-Nazi, supported Hitler’s extermination of the Jews, or were the perpetrators of the Holocaust are wrong and offensive. Yet, such sentiments are now common among many academics in North America and Europe, for whom disdain for Poland is matched only by dislike for the USA.

Yes, there were Poles who collaborated with the Germans, some of whom betrayed their Jewish neighbors. Such collaboration occurred all across Europe. Yet, to claim that Poles in the main were collaborators radically falsifies the past. Between 1939 and 1945 Poland was invaded by the most powerful and violent totalitarian regimes the world has ever known. The Nazis’ occupation of Poland exceeded in brutality their treatment of any other country. The Nazis and Soviets deployed every ounce of their power to make the Poles submit and collaborate. And so it is no surprise that some collaborated.

What should surprise us is not how many knuckled under to such overwhelming force, but how many resisted. Poland fielded the largest resistance movement in Europe, tying down hundreds of thousands of German troops. Poles fought in every major campaign against Germany, making huge contributions to Allied victory. Poles also rescued Jews in large numbers. According to one scholar, even after the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto, nearly 30,000 Jews were hiding in Warsaw alone. While it took a single collaborator to betray a Jew, it took about 25 Poles to hide a Jew. Anyone caught helping any Jew faced instant death along with their family and neighbors. Yet Poles constitute the largest number of The Righteous commemorated at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center.

While Joseph Puder’s recent Frontpage article highlights resistance fighter Jan Karski, Puder implies that Karski was singular. He was not. Countless members of the resistance not only tried to aid Jews, but sought to document German crimes and the unfolding of the Shoah. Witold Pilecki deliberately got himself arrested by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz. There, he organized resistance inside the camp, facilitated escapes, and compiled detailed documentation on the extermination of Jews. Karski presented his information to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to get Allied leaders to pay attention to the slaughter of the Jews, information Roosevelt ignored.

For this, the Poles paid a terrible price. Though Germans focused their murderous plans on Jews above all others, they did not spare Polish gentiles. Two million Polish Christians were murdered by Nazis alone, not to mention hundreds of thousands more by the Soviets and German-armed Ukrainian nationalists. Every family lost loved ones. And the killing did not end with the defeat of Germany. Poland’s new communist masters killed as many as 50,000 more, including many members of the resistance movement. Those who had aided Jews during the war were special targets, including Witold Pilecki, who was arrested, tortured for weeks, and executed. The Soviets claimed that non-communist resistance members were “collaborators,” publicized this as justification for their repression, and as final insult dressed many of their victims in German uniforms before putting them on show trials and executing them. Many Western academics are now reviving this Stalinist trope.

History and memory are vital to both Poles and Jews. They may never agree on the past. Nor should they be compelled to do so. There should never be competition among victims of the Nazis. For many Jews, cases of Polish collaboration understandably evoke deep bitterness. Yet to see only this and not the other side is a serious distortion of history. For Poles, it is yet another reminder of Soviet propaganda and of their betrayal by the West – a betrayal that resulted in 45 years of communist repression. Acknowledging what the Poles endured in no way diminishes the absolute horror of the Shoah or the losses Jews suffered.

What insults Poles isn’t discussion of collaboration as much as that Polish resistance and losses are ignored in the West and in Israel. To lose so many family members to the Nazis and then to be accused of being a Nazi is deeply offensive. This is why last year, the Poles in a fit of ill-advised pique passed a law that attempted to criminalize blaming Poles for the Holocaust as a form of Holocaust Denial.

The recent statements by Katz and Netanyahu are, therefore, somewhat problematic. No Israeli leader goes to Washington and lectures Americans about FDR’s failure to help Europe’s Jews before or during the war. No Israeli leader goes to France—where Jews today are under real threat—to lecture the French about the Vichy regime, which collaborated completely and willingly in rounding up Jews for the death camps. Netanyahu is smart enough to know that whatever the Americans or French did or not do in World War II, it shouldn’t interfere with Israel’s interests. Yet with Poland, that filter seems absent. Israel has real enemies who want to destroy the Jewish state and are building weapons of mass destruction to do so. And so one can argue that to insult an ally who goes out of his way to help is an unforced error Israel does not need.

There is now deep bitterness between Poland and Israel and it will require leaders in both countries to show higher degree of statesmanship to repair the breech. The past cannot and should not be be forgotten, but leaders should know when and how to speak of it. Jews and Poles suffered greatly at the hands of the Nazi regime, but allowing a conflict over that past to wreck relations in the face of a dangerous world not only weakens our security but also perpetuates the poison of Nazism — and dishonors the memory of the dead.
